It Comes with the Territory

Okay, I know we have talked about potty training several times but one aspect that I haven't seen addressed in our previous posts was constipation I know this isn't a fun topic, but we are currently combating this issue at my house and having several problems with it.  I've talked to our pediatrician and all the non-medication remedies that he suggested haven't worked.  Before I start putting my child on miralax, I wanted to ask all you smart moms out there who have dealt with this issue what you have done!

We tried the prune juice, increasing his water intake, changing up his diet to include more fiber, and decreasing the amount of dairy products he eats and nothing has worked so far!  We still end up with the same result of messed underwear. So, if you have any other ideas for what we could try please leave a comment!

This is something that we have battled for MONTHS with my three-year-old. It's the only reason she's not fully potty trained. She never has any wet accidents anymore, but the constipation has made the other half quite frustrating for all involved. I can't tell you how many pairs of underwear we've gone through in a day...

I somehow doubt this is the answer you want to hear, but the best thing we did was put her on Miralax. I have heard others say that their children had stomach issues while taking it, but that was not at all the case with us. Once my daughter was on it, her body got into a much more regular pattern and she has control of when she goes like she never could before. We tried several things before, too, like juices and diet changes like you mentioned. While they did help somewhat, she was too backed up for them to resolve the issue completely. We've used the Miralax to get everything cleared up and regulated, and now we use more of the diet changes to help maintain.

We figured out that the problem had been escalating too long and she really just needed that extra medicinal help to fix it. Once the medicine did its job, we are now more focused on preventing it from happening again.

My kids all had constipation issues stemming from milk even when they were nursing. Any trace of it made going to the bathroom really difficult for them. My dr told us to do all sorts of dietary changes as well but honestly? Same as Laura, even after we took all dairy out of the diet, they still needed the Miralax to get them going.

It hurts, it takes several weeks, its not the most fun. But once you get it worked out, it'll make everything so much easier.

Sometimes leaving it up to the medications is really the best option, although I do admire you for sticking it out and trying all the other things first!
