Requests From Our Readers: Week 17

We have our first Reader Request for the new year!! Thank you so much for contributing. This week we are talking about baby bottles. Check out what our reader said.....

"What are your favorite bottles to use with infants? I used Avent bottles with my first child. I loved the bottles with one exception, THEY ALWAYS LEAKED!!!! It was so annoying to have milk leak all over the place. What bottles have you used? Which did you like the best?"

So help her out:

Tell us your favorite types of bottles and why.
Tell us what you've tried that works and what you've tried that doesn't work.
What other tips can you give us about bottles?

Just shoot us an e-mail if you have a question that you'd like discussed! Thank you for reading and commenting.

At first I tried the soothie bottles and got frustrated, when my daughter would just cry and cry when I gave them to her...come to find out the nipples had the tiniest hole possible and nothing would come out when she sucked. I even tried sucking them and it was tough for me to just get a few drops out. So I bought some playtex bottles the ones with the wide nipples and she seemed to like those. They also have a cool vent system to reduce air bubbles!

Oh ya, I also bought some seperate playtex nipples with a slower flow than the ones that came with the bottle, because the milk came out too fast.

I too have tried the soothie bottles, because my son liked those binkies, but he hated the bottle. The nipples weren't great. I also switched to the playtex bottles with liners. I love the bottles with liners because it is less for me to clean up. And when you're on the go, less clean up is nice.

I had Avent bottles with my first and they did always leak. My very favorite is the Playtex drop-ins. The drop-ins can be trashed or rinsed out and reused. It's so nice for traveling because the bottle doesn't get all nasty. I can just toss the liner and be done. When I'm home, I rinse it out and reuse it a few times before disposing of it. While we're on the topic, I'm looking for a good transition sippie, too. Any ideas for the soft suck kind to go from bottle to sippie?

With my first, I used the Playtex drops ins and loved them. I picked them because I hate cleaning the milk that's left in the bottom if it dries. They were really easy to clean.

My little girl wouldn't drink from them, so I bought her some soothie bottles, and she liked those better. The only problem I have had with them is that some of the lids don't fit very well.

PS whoever you are - if you are wanting to try the playtex drop ins, email me. I am not using the ones I bought for my son, and I could make you a good deal.

(and by good deal I mean you would just pay shipping and would have to buy new nipples.)

I actually didn't have too much trouble with the Soothie bottles. I chose them because I was nursing and my baby used a soothie binky. I didn't want to cause nipple confusion so I stuck with just the same type of nipple for a while - when she was older neither of us cared what type of bottle she used. But Soothie is nothing special, so unless your baby likes soothie binkies, then you can go with something else.

The other thing I liked to do was to just screw a nipple onto my pump bottles. I liked this because then I didn't have to wash three bottles after pumping (just the two I used to pump anyway). So that's a nice route to go if you are nursing.

To the person asking about a good sippy cup to use for transitioning, we had good luck with the Nuby cups. You can buy them for about a dollar at Wal-mart or Target. They do tend to leak eventually so I wouldn't use them long term, but this was THE ONLY cup we could get my son to use at first. As soon as he was used to the Nuby, we switched him to the hard plastic Playtex sippy. Since they only cost about a dollar, I wasn't stressed about only using it for a short period of time.

We also used the Nuby sippy cups to begin with and they worked great!

I echo what has been said. Playtex drop in nursers and soft top nuby cups are what we used...although the nuby cups at our walmart are no longer just a dollar...more like 2 for $5/6.

Both of my girls have used several different bottles--both ones we had at home and ones used at day care. I never paid too much attention to which brand or style we used. I was given several bottles for free and beyond that, I usually just bought whatever was cheapest at Walmart. My kids weren't ever picky, and I never had any problem.

The thing I noticed about sippy cups was it helped to start with a cup with a soft spout. The rubbery kind were easier to suck on and helped with the transition from a bottle. I didn't use them for very long because my daughter bit through and made the holes significantly larger than they needed to be and her drink would spill everywhere. But once she had the hang of using that sippy cup, she had no problem switching to the harder plastic cups that don't leak.

I used the Avent bottles, but I too, had problems with them leaking on occasion. I also tried the Playtex drop-ins as well, although it was hard to find medium-flow nipples as he got older. And as we switched him over to a sippy cup we used the nuby cups with a soft tip. Once he got those down we switched to the hard-tipped ones, because he started playing with the soft tip and spilling milk everywhere.

We really like the Dr. Browns bottles and used them almost exclusively for the twins. When they got older we had a set of Avent bottles and I put the Avent sippy cup handles on the bottles to get them used to holding it on their own. For travel we really liked the Podee bottles which allows them to drink without tipping their head back. We used them on many outings in the stroller.

Tip: The Dr. Brown bottles and the podee bottles come with tiny brushes. We saved the unused ones for cleaning sippy cups later. :)
