Dating your spouse

Before having kids, my husband and I used to go out on a date once a week. We both just loved it! Since our little ones have joined the scene, one on one outings have become more difficult to do. We do still enjoy ordering take out and watching a movie after the kiddos are in bed or playing games together. And we still try to let the kids play at a family members house while we go out once in a while. I would love even more ideas though, so please share your creative thoughts!

What inexpensive dates do you and your spouse enjoy doing together?
What are some fun things you like to do at home after the kids are in bed?

We have decided to define date differently. If date meant going to dinner and a movie or something of the sorts, that would mean we'd go on a date only a few times a year. We just can't afford to do that. So we consider playing a game, or reading a book, even cleaning together as our dates. We like it.

We are kind of goofy. We often head to neighbor's homes or invite them to ours at our kids' bedtime. All the kids (theirs included) are ready for bed and go to sleep. Then the adults play games until 10 or 11pm. Then whoever doesn't live there, just carries their kids home. That's fun, free, social, and essentially kid-free. We also trade babysitting with other couples. We still don't have much money, but we often head out to dinner with coupons--there are often half-off or BOGO coupons for restaurants around town--and then we usually wind up at the bookstore. We each browse for a bit, find what we are interested in, and then sit down and read next to each other. It sounds silly, but it's so relaxing and we can share interesting things while we are browsing, etc.

We sometimes go to Blockbuster and rent a movie...girls pick one they want and then we pick one for when they are sleeping.

My husband and I get a fair amount of time together after the kids are in bed, and we also take advantage of family close by who can babysit. I generally crave "dates" because I want to get out of the house. But, getting out of the house doesn't necessarily have to be an all-evening excursion. We like to get $1 ice cream cones from McDonald's, then pick up a Redbox video or two while we're there. During the summer, it's also nice to sit outside and talk or read. Even if we're not reading together, it's nice to be doing the same thing at the same time, without any kids around.

And I random fun one I just remembered. I found a book at DI once called "100 Hard Questions" It's designed for engaged couples to discuss different family and personal matters so things are "worked out" before marriage. My husband and I have learned some interesting things about each other by going through those questions now, even though we've already been married for almost four years. Sometimes it's fun to pretend you're dating and ask all those questions again!

Most of our dates end up being Redbox movie nights after the kids are asleep. Original, right? ;)

My husband and I love to do yoga together. We used to hit a class at the community center once a week. Now that baby girl is here, we have a yoga video we do together after the kids are in bed. It's fun and makes us feel good!
